Antibiotics
Many doctors choose to use prophylactic antibiotics to help our children from taking strep as it makes the rounds through schools and playgroups. The antibiotic you and your doctor choose will be based on the needs of your child. Do not be frustrated if it takes several, if not many, different medications to find the right antibiotic for your PANDA.
Neuropsychiatric Medications
For some of our children, the psychiatric symptoms are so severe that they must be treated with traditional psychiatric medications. There is a lot of controversy about this route of intervention. However, in my opinion, if the medication can keep the child and the family safe while the child heals then it is worth it.
IVIg
IVIG has been shown to be helpful with the harmful inflammation caused by autoimmune illnesses but the exact causative actions are not clear yet. Donor antibodies may “retrain” the abnormal antibodies in the patient or the large amounts administered may simply overwhelm the harmful antibodies – thereby removing them from the PANDAS patient. Suffice to say: researchers have found many beneficial mechanisms in IVIG but still debate the specific mechanisms.(http://pandasnetwork.org/understandingpandaspans/treatment/ivig/)
Homeopathy
Many parents choose to treat their children with an all natural, homeopathy route. After diagnosis by a PANDAS specialist, this route may be a route you choose. There is no right or wrong way to treat your child as long as the child continues to improve.
