I think that one of the worst things for me about PANDAS is the OCD. Our ds cannot function without his life in a certain order.
Two things happened yesterday that really made this clear:
1. When I picked him up from school, in exactly the same place I always park, he was supper grumpy and complaining. Apparently, when he gets in the car the AC must already be on otherwise it is too "hot." This was an issue even though I had just turned off the AC because I was about to freeze to death waiting on him. After about 5 minutes of complaining, he said to me "mom I don't mean to complain, but my brain tells me I have to." UGH!
2. He also told me about an incident that occurred at school in SS. At the beginning of class one of the teachers told him that he should get out one of his worksheets because they were going to work on it. He said he got it out and waited. At the end of the class one of the teachers reprimanded him for not doing anything in class. He said he couldn't put the worksheet away because "they were going to use it." How do you explain OCD to non-OCD people?
At our house we work really hard to make sure that the stated schedule happens. Sometimes life gets in the way then PANDAS becomes an issue. Our older kids had a difficult time adjusting to this, but so far we have no major issues.
